Designing Dreams' Young Entrepreneurs Program inspires and equips young designers with the knowledge, skills and exposure to create and market their own products.
Although it's a year-round program, Young Entrepreneurs moves into high gear in the summer months as students devote themselves to learning the basics of design, production, pricing and marketing. Designing Dreams artists work with these enthusiastic, gifted young designers to create a variety of products--from bags and jewelry to pillows and pet collars--from design concept through production. Students also explore the business side of design as they calculate the cost of production from raw supplies, visit suppliers, explore pricing concepts and strategize how best to reach their target markets.
Since summer 2007 when Arthur conducted a weeklong workshop for a dozen middle school students, the program has grown into a year-round program. And the positive feedback from the students, their parents, friends and customers has also grown in response to the young entrepreneurs' creations, which are displayed and sold in the Designing Dreams retail shop.
During school months, the program continues to attract students who develop their craft in the Dreams studio on weekends and hold seasonal and holiday displays and sales of their work.
The project is not only major fun but also gives a talented group of young men and women their first exposure to the challenges and joys of entrepreneurship.
